Any kind of "materialism" or "vanity" your mother may have had was more than balanced out by the positive impact on the many lives she touched and her love of life. I was born a Suzanne but my parents called me "Suzy" unless they were upset with me -- thus, it had negative connotations. When I was in my 30's we moved and I tried to become a full-time "Suzanne", thinking it more elegant sounding and not wanting to be limited by a childhood hang-up -- but it didn't really take. There are a couple folks from that era who still call me "Suzanne" when they call and I always know who they are.
